Hard-nosed, no nonsense New York City Police detective Nathan Mercer, is part of the elite Intelligence Division and for the past two years has been searching for the mysterious human-trafficker and arms dealer known only as "The Scorpion." We quickly learn that Mercer has a hard moral compass as he addresses some of the racism in the NYPD head on, leading to conflicts with his fellow officers and an attitude that most on the force won't work with. When he's paired with a new partner, Madison Cook who questions his motives and methods, the two stumble onto a sinister plot involving a crazed serial killer, occult rituals and demonic possession, and an ancient evil that threatens the city. Mercer quickly finds that the criminals he hunts aren't the only threat to the people of New York City, as he must confront supernatural forces while navigating the complexities of his own identity and past.
